Morrie's Wisdom

For this assignment, choose 1 quote from your quote journal to post on this blog. Write the quote at the top of your response to this post and then write your reaction to that quote -or- find someone who wrote about the same quote as you and respond to that person's post.

*2 points extra credit - Respond to one of your classmates' postings (in addition to your own)

Example:
"As you grow, you learn more, if you stayed twenty-two, you'd always be as ignorant as you were at twenty-two. Aging is not just decay you know, it's growth" (Albom, 118).

I like this quote because I agree with Morrie that each year I grow older, I learn a little bit more about myself and what I want out of life. I still don't have it all figured out, but I have more "peace of mind" than I did at 18 or 21. This doesn't mean I'm looking forward to wrinkles and broken hip bones, but I am looking forward to the wisdom that comes with old age. ~Ms. S.

"You don't understand! We're all going to crash. All of us waves are going to be nothing! Isn't it terrible?"
"No, YOU don't understand. You're not a wave, you're part of the ocean." -page #179

I chose this quote because the second wave says that we are not alone, but we are a part of something much larger that continues to live on...even after we are gone. That idea is comforting because dieing can be a scary thought.

"Death ends a life,
not a Relationship."
--Morrie

RESPONSE:
When I first read it I find it to be pretty true. I honestly never really thought of it in that kind of way, but Death can only take your life and not your past or who was in your life. No matter what They or Death can never take yesterday is what I say. Hopefully you understand what I said. And no matter the bad or good of the relationship they'll always be there and it can never be taken away, not even by yourself.

"Don't let go too soon, but don't hang on too long." -p.162

This quote is interesting because there are certain things in our lives that we have a hard time letting go. We don't know how to let it go or we don't want to, but as we accept the idea of letting go we feel a little more relieved.

"Each night when I go to sleep, I die. And the next morning when I wake up, I am reborn."

I think this quote means that when you sleep you're dead, because you feel like all your pain are gone. And when you wake up you feel like a whole new person, because your pain is gone.

"Well, for one thing, the culture we have does not make people feel good about themselves. We're teaching the wrong things. And you have to be strong enough to say if the culture doesn't work, don't buy it." -page #35

This quote is powerful because it is so true. I chose this quote because I agree that our culture is constantly telling us we aren't good enough. I wonder if people followed this idea, and focused more on who people are and less on what they looked like or how much money they had, that people could be happier.

QUOTE:
"Love is when you are as concerned about someone else's situation as much as you are about your own." (Albom, page #178)

RESPONSE:
This is a really good quote because i totally agree with it. Love in unconditional and when you love someone you would do anything to help them out and make them happy, and you care about their feelings and stuff just as much as your own. Sometimes when you really love someone, you try to help them, and maybe even sometimes forget to take time away for yourself, and to help yourself out too.

"Don't cling to things, because everything is impermanet."
pg.103

I think that this quote is saying all things that we cling to eventually go away. I disagree, because people can cling to family and freinds, and they're permanent. If you cling to them, it's not like they're going to leave suddenly. If Morrie was talking about material goods, like cars and jewlery, then I agree with him.

"I see your face in ever flower, your eyes in stars above, its just the thought of you, the very thought of you, my love."

great quote, the reasons why? Probably there are people that are watching me right now or it's the other way around.

"It's like I keep telling you. When you learn how to die, you learn how to live."(pg.104)

This quote open my eyes on how you can live a great life if you are able to cope with death. Take the time to smell the roses and enjoy the company with your family and friends. By Tim Betz HR.6

"dont let go to soon but dont hang on to long."
I Really like this quote. This quote makes me think whats important in life and what really matters, what we should be hanging on to and what we should let go of. Sometimes we know we should but we still hang on and other times we let go to soon and lose something important.

" By throwing yourself into these emotions,by allowing yourself to dive in all the way, over your head even, you experience them fully and completely. - page 104

I thought this comment says a lot about how we as humans ought to express ourselves. I think as humans we are taught to and only want to experience happiness, but never fear or pain. I think Morrie is right about our need to experience ALL emotions fully.

"Death ends a life, not a relationship."

I like this comment because it can be confusing. Of course death ends a life, but does it really end a relationship? I think that you don't lose your relationship because you know that you will always love them, and think about them all the time and you know that they left you as a friend.

"The culture we have does not make people feel good about themselves. And you have to be strong enough to say if the culture doesnt work, dont buy it."- pg.42

This is a great quote! I think that most of the culture doesnt make people feel good. I mean there is plenty of things our culture has created that we dont have, like for example the "perfect" body. But I also think its very hard for us not to "buy" the culture, because its around us 24/7.

"you know what that refeclts? Unsatisfying lives. Unfullfilled lives. Lives that haven't found meaning because if you have found meaning in your life, you wouldn't wanna go back." (Albom, pg 118)

I agree with this quote. This makes me want to have a more satisfying life. I want to take things slowly and enjoy ever minute of it. I want to be the on ewho never wants to go back I don't want to have any regrets. I want to be happy with my past life, and be looking into the future.

"I believe in being fully present that means you should be with the person you're with."

When you're talking to someone you should only be thinking about the conversation you are having, that's a way to be a good listener.
